Rebuilding of The Rekai Centre at Sherbourne Place
In 1988, The Rekai Centres, Canada’s first multicultural nursing home opened it’s doors. It was considered a state-of-the-art home providing resident care and service to 126 residents. Initially the home welcomed a large number of Canadians of Hungarian and East European background. Today over 31% of the residents are of Chinese background reflecting the change in demographics in the City of Toronto. The home is now considered a Class “C” building in need of rebuilding to reflect today’s standards in terms of room size for the residents. Many of the rooms are the old “ward” style with four residents sharing one room.
In February 2010, the Minister of Health and Long Term Care announced that we would receive funding to permit a rebuild of The Rekai Centre at Sherbourne Place.
We can not rebuild The Rekai Centre at Sherbourne Place on the current site as the site is too small to reflect today’s standards for the residents. We are now searching for a site as close as possible to the current The Rekai Centre at Sherbourne Place on which to build a new home.
