Welcome to The Resident of the Month: we hope you enjoy learning about these interesting people. December 2007 Resident is WilfredoWilfredo was born in Philippines. He finished school there and went to University to study mechanical engineering. It took him six years to become a professional and skilled engineer. In 1975 Wilfredo came to Canada and he got a job soon after. He worked for the big company named de Havilland, Aircraft of Canada. Wilfredo worked for this company many years until he retired. Wilfredo enjoys many things in his life. One of the favorite past time was fishing. It was his greatest hobby. Wifredo also enjoys Bowling, he used to go for the program every week. Wilfredo was teaching by his father-in- law how to cook and he became a great cook. Wilfredo likes sports and go for a walk. At Rekai Centre Wilfredo attends many programs and activities, he reads books and watches TV. Wilfredo has one son and one daughter. They both live in Toronto. We wish Wilfredo healthy and happy life! November 2007 Resident is Mary Evelyn Miss Mary Evelyn was born in London, England as the youngest of seven children. Her parents passed away when she was only 13 months old so she was raised in different orphanages as a child. She has fond memories of playing with her friends as a girl and was a mischievous child in school. Evelyn was always ready for fun and adventure! At the beginning of War World II, Evelyn worked in a laundry department as her very first job. Soon after, she started working in a factory but her quest for adventure overtook her and she sailed to Canada at the end of the war. She settled into Montreal but soon discovered that her French skills were not good enough to live there permanently, so she moved to Toronto where her English skills were more than adequate! Evelyn has many fond memories of her different travels throughout the world as a young adult. She experienced many adventures in Scotland, England and throughout all of Europe. Evelyn always enjoyed watching the different boats and ships in the Toronto harbour. Now, she spends many moments looking at the trees and everything green outside of the Rekai Center. She is a woman who has many tales to share about her former life and enjoys telling others about them. We wish to thank her for sharing her life story with all of us here at the Rekai Center! October 2007 Resident is Kenneth Kenneth was born in Scotland. When he was 14 years, he and his family moved to Canada. He finished school there and started to work. Kenneth worked as a machinist until he retired. His love to machines and vehicles Kenneth had carried through all his life. His greatest hobby is collecting models cars. Kenneth has approximately 200 electrical cars in his collection. Also Kenneth has a houses and shops made from plastic, which he bought and assembled. Kenneth’s grandchildren like come to his home and play with the cars. By the way Kenneth has 4 children and 8 grandchildren. All of them live in Canada. Kenneth has a lot wonderful memories from his trips to England, Ireland, France, America, Alaska. One of his unforgettable memories was trip to Lake Placid in the US. Kenneth enjoys good movies, classical music. His favorites are Caruso, Andrew Bochelli, the Beatles. Kenneth has relatives in Scotland. He hopes to see them again. Let us hope for that his wishes are realize come true. May 2007 Resident is Samuel. Samuel was born in Hamilton, Ontario. He was 11 years old, when the family moved to Toronto. Samuel went to public school, then the second school was Jarvis School for boys. He took cooking class there and he learned how to cook and became a good cook. Samuel and other boys used to cook for 500 boys and teachers as well. They prepared lunches mostly. The next step in Samuel’s life was workshop, a training for people who wanted to learn a new skills. Samuel made boxes for Grand &Toy store. The major job Samuel had was an office clerk. Samuel worked 38 years and he retired. Samuel enjoyed traveling. He was in Europe, Hawaii, Jamaica. Samuel likes good movies. One of his favorite movies is “Gone with the wind”. He enjoys reading, sports, walking. Also Samuel likes to watch cartoons, especially of Walt Disney works. Samuel met Joyce two years ago, and they are happy together. We wish Samuel good health and enjoyable life. May 2007 Resident is Vivian. Vivian was born in Montreal. She went to school there. Later her family moved to Toronto. Vivian worked in a clothing store and she enjoyed her job. Vivian has a lot of interests and hobbies. She is a great painter, her paintings are full of life joy, and bright colors. Vivian used to read a lot, she really enjoys a good book, which inspires her and gives comfort. Vivian wrote poetry as well. She used to play the piano. Vivian didn’t go to school to learn how to play, but she wanted so much to learn to play so that she taught herself. Her favorite composer is Beethoven. As you can see Vivian is a very talented and she is a spiritual person as well. Vivian is a very social and sociable person. She likes to meet new people, speak to them and make them feel good. Vivian attracts people with her beautiful personality. Vivian enjoys the outdoors, she can spend hours, sitting in the park or walking. She used to go to Allen Gardens and help to keep rosebushes clean. We are most happy to welcome and to have Vivian here with us at Rekai Centre. February 2007 Resident is Yuk Ling. Ms. Wong Yuk Ling was born on March 13 to Ying and Lin in Mainland China. Together with her brother and sister, Yuk Ling completed her happy family. At the Reminiscing program, Yuk Ling always shares her memoirs with the residents. In one of her memoirs, she recalls the pleasures of Chinese food and the culture of the 1940s, when she was a young girl living in China. We can almost taste and see the meals and experiences she eloquently describes. Her favourite foods are Wan-Ton dumpling noodles and crispy Chinese style chicken. Yuk Ling’s favourite season is July because she loves travelling in the summer time. Say hi to Yuk Ling if you see her in the halls. She will reward you with one of her great smiles and can teach you how to make her renowned Wan-Ton dumplings. We welcome Thomas to the Rekai Centre! October 2006 Resident is Thomas. Thomas was born in Toronto. His parents came from Scotland. Thomas went to Parkdale Public School and he finished grade 10 there. Soon after Thomas started to work. He worked for a company which supplied hardware. Thomas enjoyed working there. Thomas traveled across the U.S and Canada. He used to go to Niagara Falls with his family and they spent nice time there. Thomas had enjoyed play baseball. He likes to read books. Also he enjoys watching good movies. Thomas has five children and many grandchildren. He enjoys good food such as turkey and roast beef. Thomas has good memories about holiday especially Christmas time. We welcome Thomas to the Rekai Centre! September 2006 Resident is Peter. Peter was born in Montreal. His mother was a teacher and his father was a biochemist. Peter finished high school and started to work. Peter has been a musician. Peter is very fond of music, books, poetry. Peter has many talents. He writes poetry. Also he plays guitar and he taught people how to play. Peter is a very good singer. He knows a lot of songs. Peter had traveled a lot. He was in Europe twice and he has a wonderful memories about the trip. Peter enjoys reading philosophy. He likes to watch soccer and baseball. Peter likes painting. His favorite painters are: Van- Hog, Rembrandt, Vermeere. His favorite food is pizza. Peter likes to meet people and talk to them. Welcome Peter to the Rekai Centre! August 2006 Resident is Emil. Emil Bodavinac was born in Timmens, Ontario. His parents came from Yugoslavia. Emil finished school, grade 13th and he went to University of Waterloo. Emil studied Business there for four years. After that Emil got a job. He worked a salesman. He sold beer. It was very exited and successful job. Emil traveled across Canada. Emil has many interests. He enjoys to watch TV. Emil likes to watch news, sports, and he enjoys watching good movies. Emil had played basketball and football. He enjoys reading. Emil’s favorite author is Ernest Hemingway and his favorite book is “The old man and sea.” Emil also loves art and children. Emil admires women. Emil has three daughters and many grandchildren. Emil’s favorite season is summer. His favorite food are cabbage rolls. In Yugoslavian language it calls” sarma”. By the way Emil speaks five languages. July 2006 Resident is Peter. Armand was born in small town Sorel, 50 miles from Montreal. He has had eight brothers and sisters. Armand’s father was a carpenter, and his mother was a housewife. After grade 6 Armand’s father told him to get a job, so Armand started to work as a delivery and stock person. Armand didn’t speak English at the time, and once he met a manager from “Fwoolworth” company who offered Armand a job there. This is how Armand started his career. He went from a small position to a manager position. Armand keeps saying that the key to his success was English language. Armand was very respected at his work. He had had great problem solving skills and good managing skills. Armand traveled to Japan, Malaysia, China. He was fascinated with beauty of those countries. In 1959 Armand came to Toronto. He worked as a buyer here. Armand has two children , Pierre and Louise, three grandchildren and three great grand children. Armand was a good hockey player. He enjoys many things in his life. Armand enjoys reading. His favorite books are biography. Armand enjoys going for walks. Armand is saying that his secrets of his health are : no smoking, no drinking, no woman! ( he is kidding). Welcome, Armand to the Rekai Centre! April 2006 Resident is Milena. Milena was born in Serbia, city Shabatz. Her mother was named Daniza, and her father Milenko. She went to school there and she enjoyed her childhood with her sisters and brothers. Milena came to Canada in 1968. She has been enjoying living in Toronto, a multicultural city. Milena has worked hard at many jobs. People always appreciate her job and they tell her what is a hardest and responsible worker she is. Milena worked as a cashier at the Toronto Island. Also she worked at the factory. She has many good memories from her work. Milena absolutely fond of her dog, Melissa. The dog is her best friend: they have been together for nine years. Milena’s favorite season is spring. She loves flowers and nice clothes. She enjoying to go outside for a walk. Milena has many friends. They enjoy her company. Milena always remembers her home land, and she has gone to her town several times. Milena enjoys her son and her grandsons’ visits. Milena is very friendly and easygoing person. She loves people, music. books, and life. January 2006 Resident is Gordon. Gordon was born on October 18, 1939 in Shelbrook Saskatchewan. He later moved to Toronto in 1959 and has not moved out of the city since. Gordon once worked on both wheat and egg farms. He loved his job a lot even though it was a lot of hard work. Later Gordon worked as a care taker for 18 years in South Region Park. Gordon is a movie lover and at one time had a collection of over 7000 movies. He loves history movies and his favorite movie is The 10 Commandments. Gordon also loves traveling he has visited Europe three times and has seen it all. His fondest memory of Europe was visiting the site of Pope John the 23rd, as he was Gordon’s favorite Pope. Gordon has a great sense of humor and loves to make people happy so if you see him in the halls make sure to say hello and he will greet you with his big smile! 2005 Profiles---> |
