Building on a Proud Legacy of Excellence in Long-Term Care

Drs. Paul and John Rekai established the Central Hospital over 50 years ago. From a small building on Sherbourne Street, the Central Hospital pioneered a new way to deliver health care to the post-war wave of immigrants arriving in Canada. In 1988, this same vision led to the creation of the Drs. Paul and John Rekai Centre, Canada's first multicultural, multilingual nursing home. In 2005, the Legacy of Excellence in Long Term Care and Innovation will continue with Wellesley Central Place.

Our Capital Campaign

The Wellesley Central Place - It's about Respect!

It's about respecting the proud Rekai tradition - a symbol of compassionate, culturally sensitive, innovative health care in Toronto. This is a new beginning for long-term care that respects the dignity and individuality of residents. It's about respect for the environment and the famous historical site of the Wellesley-Central Hospital. Above all, the Wellesley Central Place is about respect for those who can no longer manage on their own - a place where individuals are valued and care is delivered with compassion and commitment.

Wellesley Central Place will be unlike any other long-term care home yet built. The 150 - resident facility of approximately 99,000 square feet will be a stand-alone 4 storey structure. It is designed to resemble a small village, with a Town Square, Main Street, small neighbourhoods and outdoor spaces designed to be beautiful in all seasons. It will provide a warm, welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike, facilitating excellence in care focused on wellness and independence, delivered by trained and dedicated staff. Ultimately, Wellesley Central Place will advance the delivery of long-term care throughout Ontario.

To date, $23 million has already been secured by a number of supporters who have endorsed our vision. To build a new home worthy of the Rekai legacy, with magnificent architecture, beautiful gardens and other enhancements, we need additional support from private individuals and organizations.

The Rekai Charitable Foundation has been entrusted to meet this challenge and raise the remaining $3 million for the capital campaign.
