Wellesley Central Place, a division of the Drs. Paul and John Rekai Centre,
is committed to providing superior- quality cost-effective and resident-oriented
health care services. Dignity and respect are the hallmarks of their philosophy
of care. In developing this new long-term care facility, Wellesley Central
Place has focused on two main guiding principles; the development of a home-like
environment and the opportunity for residents to exercise choice and control
in their lives.
Recognizing that each resident of this facility is a unique individual with
unique desires and needs, Wellesley Central Place is committed to ensuring
that each resident is treated with dignity and in a manner that is courteous,
fair, and considerate and recognizes one's status as an adult. Programs
and care will reflect individual needs and abilities. It is important that
each resident is as involved as much as possible, with regard to their care
and treatment, and is provided with opportunities to develop their interests
and abilities.
The Rekai implements rigorous standards that management and staff at all
levels regularly assess and update to ensure that they meet the physical,
spiritual, social, emotional and intellectual needs of each facility, each
Resident Home Area (RHA), each resident and each healthcare customer. This
philosophy will be continued at our newest Long-Term Care Facility in Toronto.
We have attempted to take a slightly different design approach to this Wellesley
Central Place Long Term Care Facility project. We have designed the building
using urban design principles which one would normally use in designing
a small town. The connection to nature and the outside world for us all
is a primary importance. Nature and sunlight give us a continuously reminder
of life. A breeze flowing through tree leaves and porches and the shadows
they cast on the ground create a continuously changing picture.
As a whole, the exteriors and interiors at a variety of scales work together
offering collectively as a community, yet variety and individuality for
all residents. Porches and trellised areas can be overgrown with flowering
vines. In these areas, protected from the direct sunlight, we can watch
the activities unfold all round us.
The Wellesley Central Place Long-Term Care Facility will be a special place
in the community. A mixture of urban design elements helps to create a rich
visual texture of spaces and forms. This creates a building that is both
unified and coherent and will engage the streets, the adjacent public park,
the new community centre and the existing and new neighborhoods that surround
it. The ensemble of activities, building forms and open spaces will create
a healthcare village catering to the needs of the residents. Upon entering
the building, one will experience an exterior Town Square courtyard linked
to a Main Street that moves through the building to the winter garden. Each
individual Resident Home Area has its own unique character with groupings
of smaller more intimate gathering spaces. As a result, each Resident Home
Area has a distinct interior character and feel.
